More Than Just Sales: A Day in the Life of a PMI Medical Device Sales Professional

More Than Just Sales: A Day in the Life of a PMI Medical Device Sales Professional

At PMI, our people are our most valuable assets. The largest portion of our staff are medical sales representatives. If you’ve ever wanted a job with flexible scheduling, unlimited earning potential, and a chance to travel, this job may be for you. Here’s some insights from 3 of our reps regarding opportunities and what they love about their roles.

Schedule / Target Account Strategy

Firstly, no two days will be the same. Jenelle enjoys not being tied to a desk daily and describes the importance of understanding how each facility operates so she can offer personalized solutions by touring the facility. Similarly, Meriwether enjoys visiting her clients to learn about their workflows and ensure they have the right product for their needs. This helps build strong relationships with their customers.

For Kevin, it’s all about asking the right questions and offering product demonstrations that highlight the advantages of switching to a better solution. He tries to get the infusion nurses involved, especially regarding pump systems, to show them how much more efficient our products can be.

Our medical sales representatives are encouraged to define clear goals. Some, like Kevin, assess their sales strategies weekly to omit what isn’t working. Meriwether integrates planning as part of her daily routine for reflections on improvement, taking management and peer feedback into consideration. Jenelle aligns her strategies with PMI’s objectives, by checking in regularly with her manager, leaning on their years of experience as a guide.

Work Environment & Travel

You may find yourself centrally located in a territory, needing to schedule multiple facility visits on longer trips and always maintaining a routine schedule to follow up with clients, like Jenelle. Kevin has a large West Coast territory and has found that driving vs. flying to Las Vegas monthly is a more efficient way to travel when handling medical device samples and literature. Meriwether has a more compact area to work in but remains committed to finding efficient ways to manage her territory.

Challenges

Every career has challenges, but our medical device reps have a few unique obstacles. For example, gaining access to multi-location facilities. Jenelle attempts to mitigate this by cold calling, leaving samples and meeting with other departments within the facility. Pricing agreements and contracts can add an element of complexity, but fortunately, PMI brings a well-balanced value proposition with GPO/IDN Contracts for quality products, excellent customer service, and continual clinical support. Kevin says large institutions with these committed contracts are often hard to break into, so he focuses on independent accounts. Meriwether advises that no matter the challenge, she is always patient with customers and maintains a positive attitude.

Teamwork

Our reps are clinically trained through our comprehensive new hire training program and also have the unique opportunity and advantage of support from our pharmacists and surgical experts with access to their in-depth product knowledgeand first-hand understanding of clinician workflow and the challenges faced by healthcare providers. Teamwork is baked into much of the job, including communications to our customer service team and the support of dedicated managers and committed leadership. Our sales rep onboarding and education program is led by an experienced sales trainer and includes one-on-one rep support a and an extensive eLearning Portal full of product knowledge and resources for reference. All of these resources help our medical sales representatives adapt to any circumstance they encounter so they are positioned to become trusted advisors to our customers.

At PMI, the sales process continues after the sale. Not only do we offer ongoing clinical support with every purchase, but our medical sales representatives are trained to follow up with customers regularly to maintain long term relationships. Jenelle stays in touch with her customers through in-servicing, product updates, and problem resolution to ensure they’re happy and know she’s ready to support them. Kevin regularly checks on his customers to check if they require any additional product training, making sure they are happy with the products and offers continued support. Meriwether values relationship-building and ensures customers feel supported after the sale. She visits customers often and maintains open communication to resolve issues quickly and believes trust is key to earning long lasting customer loyalty.
